Few individuals have embodied the spirit of Northern California soccer quite like Shea Salinas. A consummate professional on the field and an unwavering advocate for the game off it, Salinas has spent more than two decades inspiring players, coaches, and communities across the region. His legacy is defined not only by his longevity and excellence in Major League Soccer, but also by his enduring commitment to growing the game for future generations.
A native of Lubbock, Texas, Salinas played collegiate soccer at Furman University before being selected in the second round of the 2008 MLS SuperDraft. What followed was a remarkable 15-season Major League Soccer career, highlighted by 13 memorable seasons with the San Jose Earthquakes, where he became one of the most respected and recognizable figures in club history.
Known for his relentless work ethic, versatility, speed, and professionalism, Salinas appeared in 375 MLS matches, recording 22 goals and 53 assists throughout his career. His impact on the Earthquakes was especially profound, finishing second all-time in club history in assists, while earning the admiration of teammates, coaches, supporters, and opponents alike for his consistency and leadership.
While his accomplishments on the field are impressive, it is Salinas' dedication to serving others that has truly cemented his legacy.
During his playing career, he was honored with the Andrew Bedard Community Service Award five times, recognizing his extraordinary commitment to giving back to Northern California. Whether visiting schools, supporting charitable initiatives, or engaging with young fans, Salinas consistently used his platform to strengthen the connection between professional soccer and the local community.
Following his retirement from professional soccer in 2022, Salinas seamlessly transitioned into a leadership role with the San Jose Earthquakes Front Office, where his passion for developing the game continues to flourish.
Today, he leads the club's Community Coaching Course, an initiative focused on providing coaching education and mentorship to underserved youth coaches throughout Northern California. In just three years, the program has helped educate and empower more than 100 local coaches, creating a lasting impact that extends well beyond the soccer field.
Salinas also oversees the Earthquakes' Summer Camps Program, organizes coaching clinics throughout the region, and makes more than 50 appearances each year at schools, youth organizations, and community events, introducing thousands of children to the game and inspiring the next generation of players.
His commitment to youth development extends beyond his professional responsibilities. As a coach with the Santa Clara Lions, Salinas now coaches his own sons' teams, continuing to share the same values of teamwork, sportsmanship, humility, and love for the game that defined his professional career.
