United States 30-man preliminary World Cup roster features 22 US Youth Soccer alums
FRISCO, Texas (May 13, 2014) — Of the 30 players U.S. Men’s National Team head coach Jurgen Klinsmann named to the preliminary roster for the 2014 FIFA World Cup, 22 have ties to US Youth Soccer. The 23 players who will represent the United States this summer in Brazil will be chosen from the 30-man squad.
All 22 players from the preliminary roster who grew up playing soccer in the United States are US Youth Soccer alums, with the other eight players having been raised oversees. Seventeen players in the squad developed their skills as members of the US Youth Soccer Olympic Development Program (US Youth Soccer ODP), the nation's original player identification program that has continued its tradition of elite competition and player development for more than 30 years.
US Youth Soccer ODP alums include DaMarcus Beasley and Landon Donovan, who have both been part of three previous World Cup rosters, as well as Clint Dempsey and Tim Howard, who will each aim to make their third World Cup squad this year.
