Cal North & Cal South Combine for California Regional League

US Youth Soccer Region IV Approves New Far West Regional League Format Announces California Regional League

Pleasanton, CA (May 8, 2013) US Youth Region IV responded to requests from numerous elite teams and clubs by transforming its Far West Regional League into three divisions (leagues) and providing additional opportunities for teams to reach the Far West Regional Championships. Under this new format, the three divisions will be the California Regional League, the Four Corners League and the Northern League.

The California Regional League will receive two qualifying positions in the FWR Championships and the Four Corners League and Northern League will each receive one position. These new leagues will have the freedom to develop according to the needs of teams and clubs in their area under the supervision of the FWR League.

"We have been working on the concept of the California Regional league for some time now, with the involvement and input of Directors of Coaching from some of the top Cal North and Cal South clubs," said Cal South Board President John Mullen. "We have also had guidance and input from NCAA championship-winning college coaches to help us create this league, which will lower costs and reduce travel, while providing both top-level competition and maximum exposure for the players to college coaches, in addition to ODP and national coaching staffs. This is a great opportunity for the players, their parents, and the coaches who put so much effort into their teams."

Pete Zopfi Chairman of Cal North a driving force in pushing forward this exciting change adds "Dreams can come true! The history of youth soccer in Northern and Southern California is highlighted by the development of thousands of successful collegiate, national and professional male and female soccer players. Finally, the stars of the future will compete together in the California Regional League as the best teams of Cal North and Cal South provide collegiate coaches, national coaches and professional scouts the opportunity to see the best players in the nation without significant financial challenges and excessive travel prohibiting players from being discovered. Yes, dreams can come true!"

Work has already begun on the California Regional League to prepare for implementation of a fall 2013 season with qualifying for the 2014 FWR Championships.  To view the FAQ for the California Regional League click here Clubs and teams in Northern California interested in participating in the California Regional League should contact the Cal North office at or visit
