Far West Regionals Evening Games

June 18, 2012

7:00 PM GAMES

Under 16 Girls

Up first was the Cal North’s Far West Regional League Wild Card the MVLA Lighting and Cal South’s Beach Futbol Club a sister team from FWRL that also advanced to FWR as a wild card team. Lighting came out flat and just couldn't get going through the first half, about 8 minutes in Beach FC scored on a nice through ball to make it 1-0, then later in the half on a free kick restart just outside the box Beach FC put another in the back of the net to make it 2-0 at half.  MVLA came out much sharper to start the 2nd half, they pushed for the next 10 minutes and it really looked like the game would be what we expected, then 12 minutes into the 2nd half Beach FC scored again and MVLA just didn't get it going again resulting in a final score of 3-0 in favor of Beach FC.

Under 17 Boys

Santa Clara Sporting 94 took on the Inter FC 95 Premier.  Santa Clara scored in the 11th minute off a 12- yard header to take the lead.  They controlled most the first half.  As the second half progressed Inter pushed more and more players forward for the equalizer.  With about 10 minutes to play Santa Clara cleared a ball off the line to keep the lead.  Just before the end of regular time Inter had a goal called back due to offside.    2 minutes into stoppage Utah had a corner kick and put 11 players in the box.   Their pressure paid off as they scored after a loose ball scramble in the box.  Undaunted Santa Clara took the ensuing kickoff and 10 seconds later scored on a 22-yard bending shot into the upper right corner to win the game 2-1.

9:00 PM GAMES

Under 16 Boys

Cal North’s Santa Clara Sporting 95 Green squared off against the Scottsdale 96 Blackhawks from Arizona. The game started off with a bang as Arizona scored directly off the kickoff on a 55-yard looping shot over the Sporting keeper.  The teams exchanged scoring chances throughout the first half with Sporting netting the equalizer on a 29th minute header from a well delivered right wing cross.  Arizona answered back in 38th minute to retake the lead.   The second half was marked by several near goals for Sporting, most notably a shot in stoppage time that looked destined for the lower right corner except the Arizona keeper pulled off a brilliant save to keep the score at 2-1.

Under 17 Girls

The U17 Girls Central Valley Chilipeppers started out their first game of the FWR tournament strong, scoring a quick goal in the 5th minute to take a 1 to 0 lead against the Utah Sparta United 95 Premier.  2 more goals scored at the 12th and 25th minutes saw the Chilipeppers ease into halftime with a 3 to 0 lead. The Chilipeppers then added another goal late in the 2nd half making the final score Chilipeppers 4 Utah 0. The Chilipeppers looked strong, showing great team speed along with excellent passing and ball control.

Under 17 Boys

This 9 PM match pitted the Cal North Mt Hamilton PAC Tigres against the Oregon CFC Atlas U17 Boys.  As always the Tigres came out fast and strong, attacking hard for the first 5 minutes they put one in the net for a 1-0 lead. Atlas just couldn't match the skill, speed and strength of the Tigres and 40 minutes in on a beautiful through ball it was 2-0. The game was back and forth (with at least 60% of the time the Tigres on the attack in Oregon's half of the field) until late in the game when the Tigres center back made a run that ended in the final score making it 3-0 for the Cal North Tigres.

Under 18 Boys

7:00 AM GAMES

Under 12 Girls

Arizona’s U12 State Cup champion San Tan Legacy Red faced their opponent, Cal North’s State Cup runner up and FWR wild card, South San Jose SSJ Fusion.  The match ended in a 1-1 tie.

Under 15 Girls

The MVLA Mercury Black U15 girls played an exciting match against the local Arizona San Tan 97 Legacy Red team. After a scoreless first half, Arizona found the back of the net late in the 2nd half to take a 1 to nil lead. MVLA had quite a few shots on goal late in the match, but the Arizona keeper made some spectacular saves as the Arizona team prevailed 1 to 0 in a very exciting match.

Under 19 Girls

Benicia U19 girls gave a valiant effort without their #1 goalkeeper, but they just couldn't keep up with an energetic Colorado team as they fell 7 to 0 in their second FWR game

Under 19 Girls

Temperature at 7 AM kickoff was 81 degrees. Hayward Chaos down 0-2 at halftime with goals by Nevada in the 37th and 42nd minute.  No real clear chances for either team until Nevada opened the scoring late in the first half. The game finished 0-2 with Hayward unable to create much of an attack in the second half and a bit fortunate not to get scored on again a couple of times.  Temperature at the end of the game: 88 degrees.

Under 19 Boys

Day two started out with Cal North’s U19 Boys, Santa Clara Sporting 92 netting their second win of the tournament in a 2-0 victory over the Idaho state champions, Boise Nationals.

9:00 AM GAMES

Under 14 Girls

The U14 Girls game began with a first minute goal by Orchard Valley Heat and ended with the Heat goalkeeper making a big save off the line late in the second half to preserve a 1-0 win over the Coeur d’Alene Sting Gold from Idaho.  The score is deceptive as the Cal North team controlled most the game and had the vast majority of the scoring chances. Heat had more scoring chances but the ID keeper made a couple of very good saves.  Heat is now 2-0-0 and first in their group.

Under 15 Girls

The 9 AM game matched Bay Oaks Botafogo against Utah’s LaRoca PO in U15 Girls. Bay Oaks did a great job of controlling the game.  They scored in the 26th minute off of an impressive run down the far side with a cut back to the middle, finishing it with a nice left-footed shot.  At the 40th minute they scored again on a through ball up the middle.  The final was 2-0 Bay Oaks. Game time temperature was 93 degrees.

        Under 15 Boys

Hayward Mini Chivas had a relatively stress-free match in a 6-0 win over Alaska’s CISC Velocity 97B Blue.  The Mini Chivas evened their record to 1 win and 1 loss in group play.

Under 18 Girls

The U18 Girls Central Valley Flames lost a close one to Idaho’s Super Nova by a score of 3 to 2 in day two pool play.

Under 14 Boys

In a great matchup, the U-14 Alum Rock PAC Impact managed to come from 2 goals behind and eke out a 3 to 3 tie with Arizona’s 98 CCV Stars. Alum Rock managed to sneak a direct kick by a wall in the final minutes to secure the tie

Under 14 Boys

Even with the game time temperature being a little cooler today (95 degrees) it didn't help the U14 Boys Juventus Heat in overcoming a very strong Arsenal team from Cal South.   Heat allowed two goals during the first half, came back in the 2nd half with a score, had an opportunity to tie it on a PK but could not finish. A final goal for Arsenal later in the half had the match end at 1-3 in favor of Arsenal
